Weeds do not take over a garden overnight. It starts with one seed that landed quietly and did not get pulled. Then it roots. Then it spreads. Then one morning you look at what used to be something beautiful and you cannot find it underneath everything that moved in while you were not paying attention or didn't feel like dealing with. Intrusive thoughts work exactly the same way. The thought that shows up uninvited is not the problem. Every man in recovery gets those. The problem is what happens in the next few seconds. The linger. The revisit. The mental return trip that feels harmless but is actually the root going down. One thought unsurrendered becomes two. Two become three. Three become a pattern. The pattern becomes a pull you cannot explain and cannot seem to stop. This is why redirect has to be immediate. Not after one more second. Not after you see where it goes. The moment you recognize it, you move. A prayer. A surrender out loud. A physical action that breaks the loop. A phone call. The longer you wait the deeper the root and the harder the pull. Here is where surrender is not optional. You cannot redirect indefinitely in your own strength. The moment the thought appears is the moment you hand it over. Lord, this one is yours, take it away from me. That is Step 3 in real time. That is the daily fiat applied on a random afternoon. And here is a Parts Work angle: The thought that keeps showing up is not random. It is connected to a part of you with an unmet need underneath it. Parts Work does not just teach you only to redirect. It teaches you to get curious about which part keeps sending the thought and what it is actually looking for. When you understand that, the weed loses its seed source entirely as you learn to lead with your innermost Self. "Take every thought captive in obedience to Christ." [2 Corinthians 10:5] Not some thoughts. Every thought. Captive. That is an active, immediate, intentional response. Not passive. Not later. Now. And for the betrayed wife reading this: the thoughts that have been rooting themselves in your mind since the betrayal are not a sign of weakness. They are the natural result of what was done to you. What you are watching for in your husband is whether he is pulling weeds or letting them grow. A man who is redirecting immediately, who is surrendering the thought the moment it appears rather than entertaining it, who is reflecting on what's underneath and leading with his innermost Self, is a man whose garden is starting to look different. That change is visible over time even when he cannot always articulate it. 2 Practical Tips: To Battle Lust: Build your redirect plan today before you need it. One prayer. One name to say out loud. One physical action. One guy to call. Have it ready so the moment the thought lands you already know what you are doing next. Do not improvise in the moment. Prepare now. To Help Your Wife Heal: Ask her what intrusive thoughts keep rooting themselves in her mind since the betrayal. Do not try to pull them for her. Just sit in the garden with her. "I know there are thoughts I put there that keep coming back. I am sorry for that. I am not going anywhere while you work through them." One thought unsurrendered becomes two. Pull it now. Termites don't announce themselves. That is the whole problem. They work quietly, invisibly, from the inside out. You walk across the floor every day and nothing seems wrong. Until one morning the floor gives way and you are hurt and standing in the damage wondering how you missed it. Secrets work exactly the same way: The lie you told two years ago. The acting out nobody knows about. The version of yourself you have been presenting to your wife, your kids, your friends, your priest, that...

Today the Church celebrates the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A. Here's my reflection... First Reading, Isaiah 22:19-23God strips the unfaithful Shebna of his office and hands the key of the House of David to Eliakim. One man out, one man in, the authority entrusted and the office continuing. The Church must pair this reading with today's Gospel deliberately. Eliakim is the steward of David's household carrying the key on his shoulder. Peter is the steward of the new David's household...
